UNESCO recognizes The National Folklore Fair in Koprivshtica as an element of Intangible Cultural Heritage

The National Folklore Fair in Koprivshtica became the fifth Bulgarian Cultural element that was added to the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List. The decision was made in December 2016 session of the International Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage.

The Chiprovtsi carpets, the Bistritsa Grandmothers, the Nestinarstvo fire-dancing and the Surva Feast in Pernik are the other elements specified as world cultural treasures by UNESCO.

For more than 50 years the National Folklore Fair in Koprivshtica shows genre’s variety and extraordinary wealth of the Bulgarian folklore legacy, combined with the unique atmosphere of the Bulgarian national revival felt all over the town. The Feast is doing much to preserve and promote the Bulgarian traditional culture.

The National Folklore Fair in Koprivshtica is the first Bulgarian element entered in the UNESCO Good Practices Register for preservation and promotion of the human intangible cultural heritage.
