Kostandovo weaving factory – the place in Europe where luxury rugs are born
We’ve already told you the story of world-famous carpets from Chiprovtsi. Now we have another one – about unique carpets, royalties and Bulgarian craftsmanship in carpet-making once again.
The Kostandovo weaving factory
This time, we’ll show you the only place in Europe where the knowledge of handmade rugs has been preserved. The workshop in Kostandovo produced some of the biggest and most luxurious carpets around the world. Thirty female weavers, who demonstrate amazing skills, work there. The hand-woven rugs are made of fine wool with pictures and family coats-of-arms woven into them in vivid colors.
The British royal family, the visitors at 10 Downing Street, Churchill’s granddaughter, Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands, world famous rock star Mick Jagger, even Harry Potter – all they walk on these unique Bulgarian carpets.
16 small carpets with Kotel designs dominated by white and blue were made by order of the celebrity rock star Mick Jagger. Two large and unique carpets embellish the home of Winston Churchill’s granddaughter, Jane.
The Kostandovo weaving factory has a long list of customers. It includes British filmmaker John Eliot, the Perrin Castle in Wales, Albert Museum in Vienna and lots more. The Alnwick Castle is another place where Bulgarian carpet completes the royal interior in the sitting room shown in Harry Potter films.
Goodwoods – one of the rich British families – waited for two years for a uniquely designed carpet. The mastership of female weavers in Kostandovo was proven once again with the restoration of an antique carpet woven in 1775.
The largest and most unique rug woven by the weavers is 120 square m. It has octangular form. It was made by order of the owner of a castle in the Netherlands. It was created for three months by using an original 400 years Dutch technology.
